Tags
2 minute read
When the value of a linked attribute changes, CMP updates the tag’s value to match.
Supported platforms
CMP manages tags on the following resource handlers:
- Alibaba (Aliyun)
- AWS
- Azure Resource Manager
- Azure Local
- GCP
- Nutanix Acropolis (API v4.0)
- OCI (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure)
- OpenStack
- Outscale
- oVirt
- SCVMM
- VMware vSphere
How to use tags
A common use case is managing an AWS cost center tag. Suppose you want every server provisioned by your Dev group to have the Cost Center tag set to 1:
- Create a Cost Center parameter. Check Show on objects so it can be linked to a tag.
- Add the parameter to the Dev group with
1as its only option, so every server the group provisions uses that value. - On the resource handler’s Tags tab, add a tag. Select Cost Center (cost_center) as the Parameter, and enter Cost Center as the Tag Name.
Now whenever the Dev group provisions a server, CMP sets both the Cost Center parameter and the tag to 1.
Bidirectional syncing
CMP creates tags on the server at provision time, and you can also update them at any time. When you edit a parameter on a server in CMP, CMP writes the new value to the linked tag.
CMP also detects changes made to tags on the resource handler. When you run the Refresh Info server action, CMP updates the server’s Tags and Parameters sections for any parameters linked to tags.
Syncing from remote tags is enabled by default only for parameters, not for built-in server attributes such as owner, environment, or group. To enable bidirectional syncing on group and owner tags, select Bidirectional in the Syncing column of the resource handler’s Tags table.
View and edit tags
Tags on a CMP server appear on a server’s Details tab, in the platform-specific details pane. For example, the pane is labeled Azure Details for an Azure server.
For tags linked to parameters, you can view and edit the values on the Parameters tab of the server’s details page. To change a tag value, select the Edit icon in the Value column for the linked parameter. When you save, a parameter change hook updates the tag’s value in the associated cloud (for example, VMware, Azure, or AWS), and a dialog confirms the change.
Unlink tags
To stop linking a tag to a parameter, delete the link from the resource handler’s Tags tab. Existing servers keep the tag, but changing the parameter value no longer updates it.
