Built-in recurring jobs

The recurring jobs that ship with Cloud Management Platform (CMP), and their default state

CMP ships with a set of recurring jobs you can use as-is, customize, or disable. Several support core functionality, such as resource handler synchronization. Each job is listed below, and the ones you are most likely to configure are described in full further down the page.

All built-in recurring jobs

Most jobs ship disabled. Enable the ones you need from Admin > Recurring Jobs, where you can also change a schedule, edit a job’s parameters, or run one immediately.

Inventory and synchronization

Job What it does Default
Sync all Resource Handlers Pulls a full inventory from every resource handler, updating existing VMs and marking those that no longer exist as historical. Disabled
Sync Resource Handler Networks Syncs networks for handlers that have them, such as vCenter. Imported regions only. Disabled
Sync Resource Handlers Security Groups Syncs security groups for handlers that have them, such as AWS. Imported regions only. Disabled
Sync Resource Handlers SSH Keys Syncs key names for handlers with an SSH Keys tab, such as AWS and Azure. Imported regions only. The key material is not synced: upload it yourself, as described under SSH keys. Disabled
Sync Resource Handlers Environments Syncs environments for handlers that have them, such as AWS and Azure. Imported regions only. Disabled
Sync Resource Handlers Datastores Syncs datastores for handlers that have them, such as vCenter. Imported regions only. Disabled
Sync Container Orchestrators Resources Metadata Syncs namespaces, deployments, nodes, and pods for container orchestrators that support it. Disabled
Sync Resources For each active blueprint that names a Discovery Plugin, runs it to discover and sync resources of the type that blueprint deploys. Disabled
Clean RH Networks & Templates Removes networks and templates in CMP that no longer exist on the resource handler. Disabled
VMware Associate Networks to Cluster Fetches the networks available to each vCenter cluster and associates them with it. Disabled
Associate IPAM Networks Superseded by the IPAM pages in CMP. Disabled
Fetch and Cache available VMWare template Fetches and caches template data for VMware resource handlers. Disabled
Fetch and Cache available AWS AMIs Caches AMI data for AWS handlers. Import AMIs reads this cache, so nothing is offered for import until it has run. Disabled

Cost, rates, and billing

Job What it does Default
Download Azure rate card Downloads the current rate card for every Azure resource handler. Enabled
Import Public Cloud Billing Data Downloads the previous month’s billing data for your public clouds and records the server costs. Runs monthly. Enabled
Download Currency Exchange Rates Downloads current exchange rates for the supported currencies. Disabled
Cache Group Cost Report Data Pre-computes the Group Cost report so it renders without recalculating. Its inputs set the reporting period and can limit it to a single group; with Custom Dates selected but no dates provided, it defaults to last month. Enabled

Utilization and telemetry

Job What it does Default
Refresh All Server Utilization Runs every action whose name begins with Refresh Utilization, so one job covers all your technologies. Disabled
Refresh Stats for OpenStack Servers Queries OpenStack for VM utilization and updates server statistics. Enabled
Mira Performance Collector Collects virtual machine telemetry from capable resource handlers and sends it to the CloudBolt Platform. Enabled
Mira Action Poller Polls the CloudBolt Platform for actions pending for this instance and applies them to the named resources. Enabled

Lifecycle and power

Job What it does Default
Auto-power control servers Powers servers off and on to the power schedules set on them. Disabled
Auto-power control resources Powers a resource’s servers off and on in tier order, for multi-server applications where sequence matters. Disabled
Expire Servers Finds servers past their expiration date and runs the expiration orchestration for each one. Disabled

Housekeeping

Job What it does Default
Delete Old Job Records Deletes job records and their logs once they pass a retention threshold. Enabled
Delete User Login History Deletes user login records older than the threshold set for the job; 90 days by default. Enabled
Update Search Index Refreshes the index behind global search. Enabled
Rectify Quota Values Recalculates quota values to keep them accurate. Runs weekly. Enabled
Notify Users of Expiring API Tokens Emails the owners of API tokens that are nearing expiration. Disabled

Content and blueprints

Job What it does Default
Content Library Caching Caches CloudBolt-hosted content locally, so the Content Library page loads faster. Enabled
Refresh Blueprints from Remote Source Refreshes every blueprint populated from a remote source URL and imports blueprints from source code repositories that have Auto import branch set. Enable this job for Auto import branch to take effect. Disabled

Compliance, testing, and ITSM

Job What it does Default
Run all CIT Tests Runs all enabled continuous infrastructure tests. Disabled
Execute all Rules Evaluates the condition on every enabled rule. Disabled
Sync CloudBolt Order Status with ServiceNow Catalog Request Status Checks pending orders against ServiceNow and updates the CMP order when a request is approved or rejected. Disabled

Auto-power control servers

Disabled by default.

Powers servers off and on automatically for set periods of the day. This is useful for servers that do not need to run overnight, reducing costs and resource consumption in public clouds.

When the job runs, it looks for servers whose power schedule covers the current 15-minute slot of the current day, and powers them on or off accordingly.

To start using it, go to Admin > Recurring Jobs and enable Auto-power control servers. Then either set a schedule on an existing server from its Power Schedule tab, or provision a new server using the Power Schedule parameter. See Schedule power on/off. Run the recurring job to test it.

CMP judges time based on the clock on its own appliance, so confirm that the appliance’s time and time zone are correct.

This job runs every 15 minutes, matching the 15-minute slots a power schedule is set to. Under a less frequent schedule, a power change occurs only if the job runs during the slot when the change is scheduled.

Auto-power control resources

Disabled by default.

Powers off the servers belonging to a resource in a set sequence at set times during the day.

When the job runs, it looks for resources whose power schedule covers the current 15-minute slot of the current day. Servers are powered on in the deploy sequence defined in the server tiers on the Build tab of the resource’s blueprint, and powered off in reverse order.

To start using it, go to Admin > Recurring Jobs and enable Auto-power control resources. Then set a schedule from the Power Schedule tab of any resource that contains servers.

In every other respect, this job behaves like Auto-power control servers: it runs every 15 minutes and takes its time from the CMP appliance.

Sync all Resource Handlers

Disabled by default.

Pulls a complete inventory to discover new VMs, update existing ones (including power status, hardware, and name), and mark those that no longer exist as historical.

Enable this job on a new instance if you want CMP to keep its inventory up to date on its own. Until you do, CMP only picks up changes on your platforms when a sync is run manually.

Run all CIT Tests

Disabled by default.

Runs all enabled continuous infrastructure tests. See Admin > CIT.

Enable this job if you use continuous infrastructure testing; the tests do not run on a schedule until you do.

Execute all Rules

Disabled by default.

Evaluates the condition on every enabled rule to check compliance across the environment. See Admin > Rules.

Enable this job if you rely on rules to catch misconfigurations; enabling a rule alone does not schedule it.

Update Search Index

Enabled by default.

Refreshes the index behind global search, so that objects new to CMP appear in search results. The index lives in /var/opt/cloudbolt/search_index/ and should take only a few minutes to update.

Refresh All Server Utilization

Disabled by default.

Runs every action whose name begins with Refresh Utilization, updating the server utilization statistics used in reports. See the sample action Refresh Utilization for VMware Servers.

Clean RH Networks & Templates

Disabled by default.

Removes networks and templates in CMP that are no longer valid, by syncing against what exists on the resource handler.

Delete Old Job Records

Enabled by default.

Deletes job records from the CMP database once they pass a retention threshold: 365 days for jobs generally, and 7 days for sync jobs. Sync jobs are cleared more aggressively because there are far more of them, and they matter less as historical records.

The job also deletes the log files those jobs left on the CMP appliance. It does not delete history events the jobs created, such as the event on a VM recording when it was built.

By default, this job runs once a day.

Recurring jobs and upgrades

Your changes to a recurring job are kept when you upgrade CMP. An upgrade does not re-enable a job you disabled, reset a schedule you changed, or restore parameters you edited, because any job that already exists on your instance remains as it is.

New jobs added by a release do appear after an upgrade, in whatever state that release ships them in.
