File copy actions

Copy a file from Cloud Management Platform (CMP) to one or more target servers as part of a job

A file copy action sends a text or binary file to the servers in context, which is useful for both servers being provisioned and existing ones. File copy actions can be used in blueprints, as server actions, and as orchestration actions. The action type appears as Copy File and is marked as Beta in the user interface.

File copy action fields

In addition to the fields common to all actions, a file copy action has the following:

  • File: The file to copy. Uploaded files are stored on the CMP appliance.
  • OS Families: Which OS families the file should be copied to. Servers whose OS family is not selected are skipped.
  • Destination path: Where the file lands on the target server. For Linux, provide the destination directory. For Windows, provide the full file path, including the file name.

A file copy action can also carry credentials, so it can run as a specific user rather than relying on the server’s stored credentials.

How the copy is performed

The transport depends on the target server’s operating system:

  • Linux and UNIX: The file is copied over SCP. The same credential requirements apply as for remote scripts.
  • Windows: The file is copied over WinRM. Transport encryption follows the ENCRYPT_WINRM setting, and the protocol and certificate validation follow the server’s winrm_protocol and winrm_server_cert_validation parameters.

A file copy action is also skipped, without failing the job, when the server is not in one of the action’s enabled environments or its OS family is not among the selected OS families.
