Add a data protection plan
Connect Cloud Management Platform (CMP) to your backup system, then import protection plans to use with your servers
Your backup product handles the backup: it holds the protection plans, runs their schedules, and stores the snapshots. CMP imports the plans you want to offer, adds each new server to its chosen plan during provisioning, and lists that server’s snapshots on the server’s Data Protection tab.
To back up CMP, see Back up Cloud Management Platform and Restore Cloud Management Platform from a backup.
CMP ships with four data protection technologies.
| Technology | Protection plan name | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cohesity | Protection Job | Supported on vCenter VMs only. A restored VM comes back under a new name ending in -restore. |
| Rubrik | SLA Domain | Supported on vCenter VMs only. Rubrik 8.1 and later authenticate with an API token. |
| Commvault | VM Group | A restore runs as a CMP job. A new server does not exist in Commvault until the next backup runs on its VM group. |
| Azure Backup | Backup policy | Authenticates through an existing Azure resource handler, so the connection needs no host or credentials. |
Veeam is also available as a UI extension with its own admin page and server tab. It does not use the Data Protection Plan parameter or the Data Protection tab.

A protection plan reaches a server through the Data Protection Plan parameter
Your backup system takes snapshots of protected servers on the schedule set by their protection plan
Azure Backup protects Azure VMs with backup policies held in a Recovery Services vault
Commvault associates virtual machines with a backup plan through VM groups
Veeam is available to Cloud Management Platform (CMP) as a UI extension: install it from the Library and point it at your Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager
