Supported platforms and execution methods
2 minute read
Cloud Management Platform (CMP) runs a remote script either over SSH or WinRM, which works on any platform, or through a platform-specific mechanism, which is available on a few. Some operating systems and platforms require setup first; see OS-specific requirements.
SSH and WinRM
The generic method works on a server of any resource technology. What it needs is a network route from the CMP appliance to the server and credentials that CMP can authenticate with. The platform the server runs on does not matter.
- *nix servers. CMP copies the script to the server with
scpand runs it overssh. - Windows servers. CMP uses native WinRM.
See Authentication requirements for the credentials involved, and OS-specific requirements for what to enable on the target server.
Platform-specific execution
These platforms can run a script through their own channel, so CMP does not need SSH or WinRM access to the server at all.
| Platform | Mechanism | Used by default |
|---|---|---|
| VMware vCenter | VMware Tools | Yes |
| Amazon Web Services | See AWS tech-specific script execution | No, add the parameter |
| Azure | See Azure tech-specific script execution | No, add the parameter |
| Oracle Cloud Infrastructure | See OCI tech-specific script execution | No, add the parameter |
Turning platform-specific execution on or off is covered in Configure remote script method.
Platform notes
Hyper-V. CMP can read the IP address of a Hyper-V guest as long as Hyper-V knows it. That is reliable for Windows guests; Linux guests may need extra configuration, depending on the distribution, before Hyper-V reports an address. Without an address, CMP cannot open an SSH or WinRM session.
