Budgets

Set spending targets and track budget-versus-actual performance across your organizations

Budgets let you define monthly spending targets and compare them against actual cloud spend. Budgets are hierarchical, so you can mirror your organization’s structure: individual budgets track specific slices of spend, while rollup budgets aggregate their children into combined totals. The Budgets page provides:

  • Hierarchy view: An expandable tree of budgets showing each budget’s type, currency, and current-month target.
  • Budget vs. actual: Per-budget performance charts comparing budgeted and actual spend, monthly or cumulative.
  • Variance tracking: Monthly variance figures, with month-to-date prorated targets for the in-progress month.

Budget detail

Select a budget’s name to open its detail page:

  • Budget vs. actual chart: actual spend (solid line) against the budgeted target (dashed line) over the trailing 12 months. Use the Monthly/Cumulative toggle to switch between per-month values and a running total.
  • Monthly performance table: for each month, the Budgeted amount, Actual spend (the current month carries an In progress badge), MTD Budgeted (the target prorated to the current day of the month), Variance (actual minus budgeted, shown in red when spending is over budget), and Variance %.
  • Per-budget breakdown: on a rollup budget, a month-by-month table for each child budget.

How budgets are calculated

  • Targets carry forward. A budget’s target is set per month, and each amount applies from its month forward until you set a new amount. You only add an entry when the target changes.
  • Actual spend is the billed cost matching the budget’s filters within your organization. A budget with no filters covers all of the organization’s costs.
  • Month-to-date proration. Partway through a month, the full monthly target would be an unfair comparison, so the MTD Budgeted column scales the target to the elapsed portion of the month: on day 15 of a 30-day month, half the monthly target.
  • Rollups sum their descendants’ budgeted and actual amounts per month; they carry no targets or filters of their own.
