# Action types

> Every action has a type, which determines where and how its code runs

## The six action types

- [CloudBolt Plugin](/docs/cmp/use/orchestration/plugins/): Runs a Python module on the Cloud Management Platform (CMP) server, with access to internal APIs.
- [Remote Script](/docs/cmp/use/orchestration/remote-scripts/): Runs a script on the target servers rather than on the CMP server.
- [Copy File](/docs/cmp/use/orchestration/actions/file-copy/): Copies a file to the target servers. This type is marked Beta in the user interface.
- [Webhook](/docs/cmp/use/orchestration/actions/outbound-webhooks/): Makes a call into an external, web-based API.
- [Email Hook](/docs/cmp/use/orchestration/actions/email-hooks/): Sends an email.
- [External Flow](/docs/cmp/use/orchestration/actions/external-flows/): Runs a flow held in an external orchestrator.

## Not every type is available everywhere

The types available when you create an action depend on where you create it. CloudBolt Plugin is always available. The others are offered conditionally:

- **Remote Script** and **Copy File** require target servers. At trigger points that have no servers to act on, both types appear but are disabled, with an explanation in place of the description.
- **Webhook** and **Email Hook** are unavailable at trigger points that do not support them and appear disabled there.
- **External Flow** appears only when the external orchestrators feature is active and at least one orchestration engine is configured.
- Some trigger points accept plugins only; in that case, no other type is offered.
