# Action retries

> Rerun an action automatically when it fails

Every base action has a **max retries** value: the maximum number of times to retry the action if it fails. Whenever the action runs and returns an unsuccessful status or raises an exception, Cloud Management Platform (CMP) retries it up to that number of times. This is useful for actions that interact with a flaky external system.

The default is 0, meaning no retries, and the value cannot be negative.

For CMP plugins, the retry logic applies only to methods named run.
</div>

Retries are separate from the continue-on-failure setting available on orchestration actions, which lets a job continue after an action has failed permanently. See [Continue on failure](/docs/cmp/use/orchestration/actions/orchestration-actions/#continue-on-failure).
