Build configuration

Server tiers

Server tiers deploy one or more servers of a particular role. The OS build and other primary attributes, such as the hostname template, are typically set by the admin; end users choose the rest at the time of order, within the options and constraints defined for the target environment.

These items can be enabled for one or multiple environments, each with its own parameter options. The environment configuration form lets blueprint managers predefine certain values, so the order form does not prompt the user for them.

Blueprint actions

A blueprint can include one or more server tiers. When you need to add custom logic to the deployment process, blueprint actions provide it. Manage them on the Build tab of a blueprint’s detail view. Remote Script and Copy File actions can be associated with all server tiers, or only specific ones. You can give an action a name and description that make sense for that blueprint, and provide default values for any action inputs.

This section covers the available features and how to configure them.

Load balancers

Blueprints can include load balancing to support easy scale up and down of their resulting resources.

CMP ships with load balancer support for AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), F5 Big-IP, HAProxy, VMware NSX, and Microsoft Azure. Contact Support to request other technologies.

Create

To create a scalable blueprint with a load balancer, go to Catalog, add a blueprint, and add at least one server tier blueprint item and a load balancer blueprint item. The specific steps depend on the type of load balancer added.

Prerequisites

A general understanding of OS builds and blueprints.

A blueprint you wish to use.

Deploying multiple images on one blueprint

In CMP, create an OS build and add the desired images to it.

Go to the blueprint.

On the Build tab, add a server tier to the blueprint. Choose the OS build you configured in step 1.

On the Edit Blueprint Item form, leave the Allowable OS Families field empty.

Select Save.

Select the caret to expand the server tier build item. Under Enabled Environments, turn on the switch.

Result: When this blueprint is used in an order, CMP displays all valid environments for the selected OS build from which to deploy a server.

Resource names

If a blueprint manager does not configure this template, the resource name defaults to the blueprint name followed by a unique number. To set one, select Edit while managing the blueprint and fill in the Resource Name Template field.

The template uses the Django template format and the same uniquification scheme used elsewhere in Cloud Management Platform, such as parameter templates. The available context includes:

the blueprint itself, with all its attributes

the requestor (the order owner)

blueprint-level parameters whose destination includes the resource

the group selected for the order

For example, to name the resource after the group and the value entered for a blueprint-level parameter (with a resource destination) named
ticket_number
, enter:

Discovery/sync configuration

This is especially useful for bringing brownfield environments under management. The main component of the discovery/sync logic is the Discovery plugin. You can also choose whether an existing resource associated with the blueprint is automatically marked Historical if the Discovery plugin does not find it when it runs. The Sync Resources recurring job must be enabled for this.

Because only Super Admins can create or edit plugins, a blueprint manager who is not a Super Admin can only select an existing shared plugin to set as the Discovery plugin.
