# IP ranges

> Give a network a range of IP addresses so Cloud Management Platform (CMP) can automatically assign one to each new server

An IP range is an alternative to static addressing, DHCP, or asking the requester to supply an address. CMP tracks which addresses in the range are free, and which are in use, so each is issued only once. The range is held in an adjustable resource pool.

## Add an IP range

1. Go to **Admin** > **Networks** and select the network's name.
1. Select the **IP Pool** tab and select **Add Range of IPs**.
1. Enter a **Starting IP** and an **Ending IP**. CMP adds the starting IP and every address after it up to the ending IP, except addresses ending in `.0`, `.1`, or `.255`. Add those from the pool's **Values** tab if you need them.
1. Select **Add**.

When the network records a gateway and a netmask, CMP fills both fields with the first and last usable addresses, omitting the network, gateway, and broadcast addresses. Accept those or narrow them.

A range may span more than the final octet, but CMP stores one entry per address, so a range covering several octets creates a correspondingly large pool.

A network holds one IP range. **Add Range of IPs** appears only while the network has no pool; afterward, the **IP Pool** tab links to the resource pool.

## Change or delete a range

Once the pool exists, manage it from the resource pool: on the network's **IP Pool** tab, follow the link to the pool.

- To change which addresses are available, select the **Values** tab, where you can add, edit, and remove individual ones. Removing an address is how you apply exceptions. If an address in the range belongs to an appliance, remove it from the pool.
- To delete the range, select **Delete** on the pool's **Overview** tab. The network's **IP Pool** tab then offers **Add Range of IPs** again, so this is also how you replace one range with another.
