## Quick setup

1. Create alert channels in **Admin** > **Multi-Channel Alerts**.
1. Add one or more categories to each channel.
1. Set each channel's destination.

For the full, type-specific steps, see [Configure Slack to use multi-channel alerts](/docs/cmp/configure/access-and-security/security/multi-channel-alerts/slack/) and [Set up Microsoft Teams to use multi-channel alerts](/docs/cmp/configure/access-and-security/security/multi-channel-alerts/microsoft-teams/).

## Example: route alerts by category

A channel receives an alert only when the alert's category exactly matches one of the channel's categories. This example routes two custom categories so that both go to Slack while bad-news alerts also go to email.

First, a plugin sends alerts under two categories, `example.good_news` and `example.bad_news`. For the `alert()` API, see [Issue custom alerts from CMP plugins](/docs/cmp/configure/access-and-security/security/multi-channel-alerts/#issue-custom-alerts-from-cmp-plugins).

Next, create two alert channels that subscribe to those categories:

1. In CMP, select **Admin** > **Multi-Channel Alerts**.
1. Select **Add** and create a Slack channel with the categories `example.good_news` and `example.bad_news`.
1. Create a second channel for email with the category `example.bad_news`.

With these channels in place, alerts in both categories are routed to Slack, and `example.bad_news` alerts are also routed to email.
